Port-Cartier Institution is a federal maximum-security correctional facility for men located in Port-Cartier, Quebec. It first opened in December 1988. The institution has a rated capacity of 237 inmates. It accommodates federally sentenced men, including individuals requiring maximum-security supervision and those with special security needs. Port-Cartier was built in the late 1980s and received its first inmates from the former Saint-Vincent-de-Paul Penitentiary. The facility is the only federal penitentiary in Quebec’s Côte-Nord region. Its triangular design includes direct-observation living units and a Structured Intervention Unit for inmates requiring specialized management.
